Watertown Mayor Jeffrey Smith tipped his hand this week when discussing his method of reaching consensus on the City Council.
He called council members last month to ask what they thought of a proposal to give $445,000 to Hospice of Jefferson County in Watertown, according to a story published Tuesday by the Watertown Daily Times. The organization is expanding its Gotham Street facility by four beds (a $2.37 million project), and it wants to use this money to enhance its ventilation system. This would reduce the likelihood of spreading the novel coronavirus through the building and infecting patients.
The money would come from the Coronavirus Local Fiscal Recovery Fund, part of the more than $22 million the city received through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 passed by Congress earlier this year. The proposal offered by Hospice of Jefferson County is an example of what federal legislators had in mind when they approved this funding. ....

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - Watertown’s newest council member wants to tighten security at city hall.
During Monday’s council meeting, Leonard Spaziani referred to last week’s fatal shooting at a Clinton Street real estate office. Two people were allegedly gunned down by a former employee.
One of Spaziani’s ideas is to have people show identification before entering, as is done at the Dulles State Office Building. City Manager Ken Mix says the city could ask the state’s court administration to move its metal detectors, used for city court, closer to the entrance of city hall for everyone. ....

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - Leonard Spaziani has been sworn in to fill Watertown’s vacant city council seat.
The city council unanimously approved the pick and it didn’t take long for Spaziani to get to work.
The newly appointed council member took his seat soon after being sworn in at Monday night’s meeting.
He fills the spot left vacant by Jesse Roshia, who resigned at the end of January. ....
