Outdoor spaces like Independence Park in Marshall were looking pretty empty on Monday, as bitterly cold temperatures kept people indoors. A blast of Arctic air brought temperatures averaging 21 to 24 degrees below zero to the area Sunday night, along with wind chills as cold as 35 to 40 degrees below zero.
MARSHALL Â Bitterly cold temperatures settled in over southwest Minnesota over the weekend, along with wind chills of more than 30 degrees below zero.
While the city of Marshall was lucky enough not to see water main breaks from the frost as of Monday, it could still happen, said Jeff Larson, water operations manager at Marshall Municipal Utilities. ....

Power was back on for all of South Dakota early Tuesday afternoon after rolling blackouts caused by unprecedented demand on the grid led to outages throughout the eastern part of the state in the morning.
As of 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, the Southwest Power Pool turned power back on in parts of South Dakota and Minnesota that experienced rolling blackouts.
Power stations in eastern South Dakota and western Minnesota were being de-energized for up to an hour Tuesday morning on a rolling basis, according to East River Electric spokesman Chris Studer. ....

All this frigid weather is affecting utilities in the area. South Dakotans are being called on to help conserve energy to help out our neighbors who share the same power grid.
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - 5:30 pm: More blackouts in the region may be coming Wednesday morning as extreme temps continue to impact power grids.
At the request of Southwest Power Pool, the City of Pierre is preparing for a potential blackout early Wednesday morning.
If requested, the blackout would last between 30 and 90 minutes with no individual property expecting to be without power for more than 60 minutes, according to the city. ....

MARSHALL Mass of Christian Burial for Donald Hammer, 92, of Marshall, formerly of Minneota, will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 16, 2021, at St. Edward Catholic Church in Minneota. A walk through visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place at a later date. Masks are required at all indoor events and social distancing guidelines will be followed at all times. A recording of the service will be available at www.horvathfuneralservice.com.
Donald William Hammer was born on May 24, 1928, to William and Christine (Goodmundson) Hammer. He grew up on his family farm in Nordland Township. Don graduated from Lynd High School and played on the state basketball tournament runner up team in 1946. After high school, he attended Saint Cloud State for one year. On November 4, 1950, he was united in marriage to Audrey Nelson at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall. The couple farmed and raised ....
