MEXICO CITY Mexican authorities arrested a former governor on charges that he had a reporter who investigated his role in a pedophilia ring illegally arrested and tortured, an official said Thursday.
Interior Secretary Olga Sánchez Cordero confirmed the arrest of Mario Marín, ex-governor of Puebla, in Acapulco the previous day. On Thursday, Marín was scheduled to appear before a judge in Cancun.
Marín, of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, governed Puebla from 2005 to 2011. He was a close friend of textile magnate José Kamel Nacif, also considered a fugitive. ....

Mexico arrests ex-governor over tortured journalist who published book linking him to pedophile ring

Mexican authorities have arrested a former governor on charges that he ordered police to torture a reporter who investigated his alleged role in a pedophilia ring, an official said Thursday.
Mario Marín, ex-governor of Puebla, was apprehended at his home in Acapulco, on Wednesday, according to Interior Secretary Olga Sánchez Cordero.
Marín, of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, governed Puebla from 2005 to 2011, and was expected to appear before a judge in Cancún on Thursday. He was a close friend of textile magnate José Nacif, also considered a fugitive.
Journalist Lydia Cacho had reported on Marín s role as political protector of the pedophilia ring operated by Nacif and fellow businessman Jean Kuri, and published a book titled Los demonios del Eden or The Demons of Eden in 2004. ....

Mexico: ex-governor arrested for allegedly ordering torture of journalist

The case became a national scandal after a taped telephone conversation was leaked in which Marín was heard scheming with one of the men named in Cacho’s book.
“Yesterday I gave that old bitch a good old slap,” Marin said. “She’s been going on and on, so let’s see whether she gets the message and learns her lesson.”
For years, Marín moved freely in public despite Cacho’s allegations. Finally, in 2019, a judge in Quintana Roo state issued a warrant for his arrest.
Leopoldo Maldonado, a lawyer with the Artículo 19 press freedom organization and a representative of Cacho, told Milenio TV on Thursday that Marín was now held in the same Cancún prison where the businessman Jean Succar Kuri, already convicted of his role in the ring, is serving his sentence. ....
