Earthquake near Mount Morris shakes up region

Residents from Perry to Avon reported homes shaking, dishes rattling and large booms across the region Thursday night following an earthquake that had its epicenter in Livingston County.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 2.4 magnitude earthquake occurred about 8:40 p.m. about 2 kilometers, or 1.2 miles north-northeast of the hamlet of Tuscarora in Mount Morris. The location along Gulley Road is east of Letchworth State Park.
The epicenter was 3.7 kilometers, or 2.3 miles from the surface, according to USGS.
âIt was nuts. A huge boom and shaking,â Angela Nacol Purcell wrote on the Livingston County News Facebook page. Purcell identified her location as Tuscarora/Mount Morris. ....

Bear fountain in Geneseo NY hit by cars 3 times since March

Geneseo’s iconic “bear fountain” on Main Street between Center and Bank streets was hit by cars on March 31, April 26 and May 8, the Livingston County News reported.
No one was hurt, and the fountain sustained no major damage, just scrapes to its pink-tinged granite basin. But the rash of episodes represents the continuation of an odd phenomenon: motorists running head-on into a large, highly visible landmark.
Especially odd because many of the crashes have occurred during daylight hours, noted Geneseo Fire Chief Andrew Chanler.
“It boggles the mind,” said Amie Alden, who was born and raised in Geneseo, now makes her home in Groveland and serves as Livingston County historian. ....
