Works are progressing on a major refurbishment of Carlisle s flagship sports and events centre. Contractors are part-way through a significant refurbishment of the Sands Centre in Carlisle, which remains underway with extra measures in place to keep the site Covid-secure. The redevelopment of the Sands Centre, a Carlisle City Council building, is a major project for the local authority, set to cost more than £27m in total. City council members of business and transformation scrutiny panel are set to receive an update on the progress of the project on Thursday. A report prepared in advance by city council deputy chief executive Darren Crossley outlines the main milestones so far hit in the 98-week refurbishment project. ....
THE SOUTHERN BYPASS Driving between the west of Carlisle and the south east of the city has long been a drawn-out affair, involving a detour through the city centre or a convoluted route via Dalston. The Carlisle Southern Link Road (CSLR) will end that. CSLR fills the missing piece of ring road around Carlisle, which began with the M6 to the east and continued in 2012 with the Northern Development Route (western bypass). The CSLR – likely to be widely known as the southern bypass – will skirt the south of the city, connecting Junction 42 of the M6 with Wigton Road. Cumbria County Council has launched the process to find a contractor to design and build the five-mile road. The intention is to award the contract next January with the work starting in 2022 and completed by March 31, 2024. ....
NEW PURPOSE: Plans have been lodged to use the former Newman chapel Plans have been lodged to repurpose a former Carlisle school chapel for use as a funeral director s chapel of rest. Carlisle City Council has received an application for planning permission to convert the former Newman School chapel on Lismore Place into a chapel of rest for use by a well-known Carlisle undertakers. The application has been made by long-established Carlisle funeral director Sean Crilley, based in Brook Street, close to London Road. If approved, the plans would see the former Newman School chapel put back into use for the first time since 2015, when it and the rest of the Catholic secondary school was devastated by flooding caused by Storm Desmond. ....
