Black families experience 'year from hell'

It’s been a tumultuous and difficult year for Black parents since the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer.
Many Black parents remain on edge amid police killings of Black Americans that have continued since Floyd’s killing, which sparked nationwide protests against racism and police brutality.
Black Americans separately have endured a disproportionate burden during the pandemic, with recent data showing higher death rates for Black people and Black women in particular. There are also fears that Blacks are being left behind in the nation’s economic recovery. 
 
‘A year from hell’
For Black families, these past twelve months have “been a year from hell,” Marc Morial, president and CEO of the National Urban League, the country’s largest historic civil rights and urban advocacy organization, said in an interview with The Hill. ....

In interview with agents, Minneapolis police chief details 'emotional' discussions before officers were fired hours after George Floyd's death

Sometime around noon on the day after George Floyd died while pleading for breath under a police officer s knee, Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo summoned his top staff to a meeting in his office.
He told them that he was leaning toward firing the officer, Derek Chauvin, and three of his colleagues who were involved in Floyd s arrest, but that he wanted a second opinion before any decision, according to interviews and documents describing the nature of the meeting obtained by the Star Tribune.
In terminating the officers less than 24 hours after Floyd s death, Arradondo moved more quickly and decisively than his predecessors, who in some cases waited weeks or months to discipline officers for alleged misconduct and even then only after intense public pressure. ....

'Real Talk' virtual town hall series focuses on helping participants mentally prepare for Chauvin trial

The Urban League Twin Cities held a virtual town hall on Friday as part of its series called Real Talk. Friday s focus was on preparing families and communities for the upcoming high-profile murder trial in the death of George Floyd. KSTP s Brandi Powell spoke with Black civil rights and mental health leaders about it.
I believe that he is absolutely entitled to a jury by his peers, and he s entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty, however, that presumption of innocence does not negate what I saw .
