CINCINNATI -- About this time last year, Donny Harper opened his new Go(o)d Company Apparel store on Vine Street in Over-the-Rhine.
Before he could schedule an official grand opening, COVID-19 hit.
“This is a location that I’ve been, like, praying for,” said Harper, who launched his clothing brand in 2014 and had a shop on Race Street before moving to his new location. “We opened the doors at the beginning of March and, you know, the pandemic was stirring. And in the middle of March, they said, ‘Shut it down. We’re shutting down everything.’ And so it was super disappointing and disheartening.”

WCPO 9 is exploring the work of Mamie Smith and Siri Imani as part of its long-running Black History Month series called “Then and Now” describing the contributions of an African American trailblazer from Greater Cincinnati’s past and a modern-day counterpart.

CINCINNATI — Cincinnati-born Mamie Smith became the first Black performer to sing on a commercial blues recording in 1920 -- then changed the course of music history a few months later when her record “Crazy Blues” became a smash hit.
“It opened this commercial space for recordings by Black artists, popular music by Black artists, and that, I mean needless to say, that door has never closed,” said John Jeremiah Sullivan, a contributing writer for “The New York Times Magazine” who has researched Smith’s life and career. “The line from Mamie Smith to Beyoncé and Alicia Keys is – it doesn’t even wobble – it’s just a straight shot. She’s truly a pioneer in that way, truly a path breaker.”

COVINGTON, Ky. — Amanda Mills loved her 1991 Ford Taurus.
Her grandfather gave it to her several years ago, and the car was just what she needed to leave an abusive relationship.
“That was my baby, you know? It was there, like, through thick and thin,” said Mills, a mother of four boys who is now studying to become a nurse. “It was beaten up, but it got me to where I needed to go, and I was always so grateful every day to have a car.”

Could city of Cincinnati's delay push hundreds of homeless people back onto the streets Jan. 1?

Could city of Cincinnati's funding delay push hundreds of homeless people back onto the streets Jan. 1?
'January 1st is approaching very, very quickly'

CINCINNATI — Hundreds of homeless people now staying in local hotels could be back on the streets Jan. 1 unless the city of Cincinnati moves quickly to transfer federal funds to service providers.
Homeless shelter operators first approached Cincinnati City Council in September with a plan to expand winter shelter operations because of the growing number of people experiencing homelessness and living outside.
But the city has yet to transfer roughly $4 million in federal grant money specifically aimed at helping people who are homeless, said Kevin Finn, CEO of Strategies to End Homelessness, which allocates funding to homeless service providers in Cincinnati and Hamilton County.

CINCINNATI — Samuel Landis knew the vacant Queensgate Correctional Facility could be an ideal place to provide warmth this winter for people experiencing homelessness.
He knew because it saved him from the cold years ago.
Back when Landis was homeless and the temperatures dropped, there were times he went where he didn’t belong, he said. When he got arrested for trespassing, Landis wound up at the old jail.

CINCINNATI — Things are looking up for Justice Pernell.
When WCPO 9 met him seven months ago, he was a teenager on the brink of homelessness, although he didn’t exactly see himself that way.
Pernell was living with his best friend’s family after having slept in his car for a while and said in May that he considered himself “one of the lucky ones.” Still, after years of living in foster care and shuffling from place to place, he couldn’t help but feel like “anything could happen.”
