After a dramatic series of twists and turns, a major school choice expansion in Kansas was shot down Friday in the Kansas Senate, with legislators now forced to find a path forward on funding the state s public schools.
The legislation narrowly passed the Kansas House on Friday but hit a snag in the Kansas Senate. Ultimately, supporters were unable to overcome skepticism from moderate Republicans over a sweeping new school choice program allowing families to use public per-pupil funding for private school tuition.
Democrats and some Republicans have argued the structure of Senate Bill 175 will bust the state’s budget and amounts to “playing games” by tying the budget for the Kansas State Department of Education to the controversial school choice expansion favored by conservatives. ....

Topeka A split among Republicans on Friday blocked a proposal from conservative Kansas lawmakers to allow parents of academically struggling students to pay for private schooling with state dollars normally earmarked for public schools.
A bill that ties public school funding to the proposal failed on a 20-20 vote in the GOP-controlled Senate. The chamber had voted 19-19 against the measure Thursday night, with two Republicans absent.
The bill would set up education savings accounts for students who are at risk of failing in public schools. Parents could use the funds for a wide range of educational expenses to help their children, including private school tuition. ....

Apr. 10 TOPEKA Kansas Senate Republicans ousted Sen. Gene Suellentrop as majority leader Friday the first major political penalty paid by the Wichita Republican after he was charged with leading police on a drunken wrong-way chase down Interstate 70.
The extraordinary vote by the GOP caucus marked an all-out attempt by senators to separate themselves from Suellentrop, who has become politically toxic amid revelations he allegedly taunted a police officer after his arrest and had a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit. ....

Mobile COVID testing clinics come to Cape Breton this weekend » The Coast 89.7 FM


Public Health is sending mobile units to Cape Breton this weekend to offer more COVID-19 testing.
The mobile testing clinics will set up at the Port Morien Legion today, and at the Fortress Seniors Club in Louisbourg tomorrow.
The clinics run from 11 in the morning to 5 in the evening in both places.
People are being asked not to come to the mobile unit if they’ve travelled outside Atlantic Canada in the last 14 days, if they’ve been at a potential exposure site, or if they’ve been identified as a close contact of someone who’s tested positive for COVID-19. ....
