With infection rates rising steadily and COVID-19’s third wave of variants now penetrating into all corners of the province, it is all too easy to focus on the immediate and familiar – the situation in your community, municipality or province – rather than the bigger, global picture.
Early on during the pandemic in 2020 we heard and read and saw much of what was happening in Europe, in places like Italy where the health system nearly collapsed, and there was much early news coverage when the virus first emerged in China. Other areas such as Brazil or Russia or Africa managed to creep into the headlines, but almost incidentally. This was hardly surprising, because at the time we all had our own COVID fish to fry. ....

Costly government child care isn't a winning solution


There’s a big difference between making something affordable and playing a shell game with the costs.
Unfortunately, the feds are choosing the latter with their new child-care program.
The federal 2021 budget allocated $30 billion over the next five years towards a national child care program in an attempt to bring costs down for parents. This will be added on top of the $27 billion in direct payments parents already receive every year.
The budget says “it is time for the rest of Canada to learn from Quebec’s example.”
We should indeed learn from Canada’s experience with government-run child care. ....

In a democracy, it is the government’s job to defend people’s right to speak freely. Yet, the federal Liberal government is doing the exact opposite.
Bill C-10-An Act to amend the Broadcasting Act and to make related and consequential amendments to other Acts – was first introduced in the House of Commons on November 3, 2020.
Originally, Conservatives were supportive of many parts of this bill because there was a common understanding the Broadcasting Act needed to be updated and modernized in order to create a level playing field between large foreign streaming services and Canadian broadcasters. ....

Our Alberta Rockies, the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains, our trees and trails, the animals and birds roaming its forests, the fish in its streams and rivers, the Red Deer, the Bow, the Old Man, the North and the South Saskatchewan: These were protected by policy set out in 1976 by then-premier Peter Lougheed.
Lougheed, after wide public consultation, agreed with Albertans that the eastern slopes should be preserved for recreation, tourism and, above all, watershed protection. This Coal Policy of 1976 essentially created a limited moratorium on new coal mines on the Eastern Slopes of the Rockies. ....
