DICT installs free Wi-Fi to boost Covid-19 jab info drive

BAGUIO CITY – To ensure that people are well informed about the government’s coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccination program, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has installed a system that will provide free Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity) to the residents of Mankayan town in Benguet.
Mankayan Mayor Frensel Ayong on Wednesday said the project is a joint undertaking of the DICT, the Mankayan local government unit (LGU), and Lepanto Consolidated Mining Company (LCMC) to provide connectivity to the primary vaccination site established in the town.
“It is a DICT-initiated project with our collaboration in support of the health services,” Ayong said. ....

Palace lifting of moratorium on mining deals could lead to more disasters

Kalikasan PNE expressed fear in a statement Thursday, April 15 that the move–made official by an Executive Order (EO)–might lead to more disasters during the time of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
“[President] Duterte’s order to lift the mining agreement moratorium will be a disaster upon disaster because the Mining Act of 1995 is still in place. We cannot allow this deluge of destructive large-scale mining when communities are still suffering from the converging pandemic and climate crises,” said Leon Dulce, the group’s national coordinator.
“The Mining Act encourages the opening up of mineral lands to up to 100 percent ownership by foreign corporations. It does not orient the mining industry to extract based on people’s needs, but based on unfettered corporate greed,” Dulce noted. ....

Gov't finalizes FTAA renewal for Oceanagold – Manila Bulletin

Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Director Wilfredo Moncano told Business Bulletin that discussions on this matter already concluded and that the new FTAA now awaits the signature of Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu.
After that, the FTAA will be forwarded to the Office of the President (OP) for President Rodrigo Duterte’s signature.
FTAA is a contract that allows a foreign-owned mining firm to operate in the Philippines as well as explore and utilize the country’s mineral resources.
The deal also gives the government a pre-determined share in the mining project. ....

PSE changing sector indices composition on Feb. 15

The Philippine Stock Exchange, Inc. (PSE) is adding newly-listed firms in its sector indices while the main PSE index (PSEi) will see no changes in its composition.
In a statement, the bourse said these changes are based on the regular stock performance review for the January to December 2020 period and will take effect on February 15, 2021.
In terms of sector indices, ten companies will be added while seven will be removed. Among the ten listed firms are the three companies that listed on the main board in 2019 namely Axelum Resources Corporation (AXLM), AllHome Corporation (HOME), and Fruitas Holdings, Inc. (FRUIT). ....
