Murray State received $70,000 of funding from the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief fund (GEER) that will go towards mental health services on campus.
Angie Trzepacz, director of counseling services, said the funds will be distributed to all the Kentucky public universities by the Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE).
Murray State will allocate the funding for three areas. First, the state paid for mental health first aid training for faculty and staff who are interested. Second, the funding will contribute to accessing Therapy Assistance Online (TAO) for all students, faculty and staff for the next 16 months. The remaining funding will go to mental health services. ....

Two Murray State students entered and placed in the 2020-2021 Hearst Journalism Awards Program.
The program is a collection of 14 competitions for journalism undergraduate students. There are five writing, two photojournalism, one audio, two television and four multimedia competitions each year, having to consist of already broadcast materials.
Piper Cassetto, senior television production major, won fifth place and a $1,000 scholarship in the Hearst Media TV Features competition. She entered “Pony Up,” a two-part video series that follows the Murray State Racer Girls on their journey to the Fall 2020 OVC Tournament. ....

President Bob Jackson became the first member of Murray State’s Epsilon Lambda Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha to receive the fraternity’s highest honor.
Jackson was named a distinguished alumnus and inducted into the Order of West Range, a lifetime achievement award that is given to alumni for service to society and accomplishments in their careers, according to a press release.
“I am honored and grateful for this recognition,” Jackson said. “I am being recognized as part of an outstanding group and there are many others who are very deserving of this honor, but I am very appreciative of this award. Professors test wastewater to further prevent COVID-19

A wastewater testing project for Mayfield, Kentucky, is helping to track and identify potential COVID-19 outbreaks before the infected even begin showing symptoms.
The project started in November and is a partnership between the Graves County Health Department, Murray State, Mayfield Electric and Water Systems, the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky and the University of Louisville Co-Immunity Project.
The process begins in Mayfield, where the wastewater samples are collected by Mayfield Electric and Water Systems at their wastewater treatment facilities. From there, it is sent to Bikram Subedi, assistant professor of analytical chemistry, and Gary Zeruth, associate professor of cellular and molecular biology, for testing. ....

The Murray State School of Nursing has recently formed a consortium with Murray-Calloway County Hospital and the Purchase Area Health Education Center to build a nursing simulation center to help train and recruit nurses to meet the current need across the area.
Dina Byers, dean of the School of Nursing and Health Professions, worked with Dana Todd and Tonia Mailow to secure a grant from USDA Delta Health Services.
After submitting the grant application in August, they were made aware that they had been awarded $960,000 to put toward the simulation center. ....
