Sarah Doremus had no interest in teaching when a friend approached her about a job opening at the Sedgwick Elementary School eight years ago.
“My initial thought was, ‘I’d rather gnaw my arm off,’” said Doremus, a sculptor and jewelry designer who lives in Deer Isle.
But the prospect of health insurance and summers off made her reconsider, she said in a phone interview. Then she decided teaching elementary school-aged children could be a fun new challenge and it was. ....

Non-residents can now get vaccinated in Maine, and soon young teenagers can, too, as the rules and places for getting a COVID-19 shot continue to change.
Northern Light Health is phasing out its mass vaccination clinic in Bangor, instead offering walk-in appointments at the Eastern Maine Medical Center Monday through Saturday, starting May 11. The health system is also preparing to administer vaccines in its doctor’s offices, including at Northern Light Primary Care in Castine and Stonington.
With nearly half of all eligible Mainers vaccinated, state officials and health care providers are trying to make it easier for everyone else to get shots. ....

Paving, too work will go to July
These bridge inspectors have a great view of Eggemoggin Reach, but they’re up there to inspect the bridge. Contractors for the Maine Department of Transportation are inspecting and paving the Deer Isle-Sedgwick Bridge as part of a $1.6 million project expected to end July 1, according to a DOT press release.

On April 13, 143 people had signed up for 100 doses of Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine available the next day at the town’s pop-up clinic. One hundred people got on the schedule, 43 on the waiting list.
Two weeks later, only a third of that number had signed up for Stonington’s next clinic on April 29.
The town had canceled the April 14 clinic because the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended a temporary halt to the Johnson & Johnson shot. Six people who’d taken it developed a rare kind of blood clot. Ten days later, the CDC said the Johnson & Johnson shot was OK. ....
