Ramaphosa faction dividing Limpopo NEC hears ANC Limpopo provincial chairperson Stan Mathabatha has raised concern over president Cyril Ramaphosa’s faction dividing his province. In a leaked recording during Saturday’s national executive committee (NEC) meeting, Mathabatha said he had observed “comrades who run around purporting to be the defenders of our president”. “They are running and dividing the ANC, pursuing their personal and divisive agendas in the province. Comrade president, they are organising meetings in our province. If the president or the chair or top five permit, I can organise a meeting with the top five and mention those comrades by name and the meetings that they convene in my province where some of us were vilified in those meetings,” he said. ....

But that move has overshadowed his suspension and provided insight into his current strategy. Magashule is likely to appeal his suspension to Mathews Phosa, the lawyer and former treasurer and Mpumalanga premier who will hear appeals from any of the estimated 30 party representatives who must now step aside. If he does not appeal, Magashule will use his powerful bank of lawyers to go straight to court to argue that his right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty is violated by the step-aside rule. Magashule is the most prominent ANC leader who must step aside, but the decision affects about 30 other party members who also face criminal charges. Magashule tried to stop the party from releasing the media statement which revealed that the party’s high command, its National Working Committee, had endorsed the March meeting where Magashule and others were given 30 days to step aside or face suspension. Passed by then labour minister Mildred Oliphant in December 2018, the guidelines made it illegal for unions to embark on strikes and lockouts before conducting secret voting among members. The guidelines came into effect on January 1, 2019, giving unions 180 days to amend their constitutions to include secret balloting to test whether members favoured a strike. ....
