Lapeer community mourns death of longtime educator who was ‘more than just a teacher’

Shannon Leigh Nichols died on Monday, Feb. 15, after battling melanoma. She was 46.
“A great mom, great wife, great employee,” Lapeer Community Schools Superintendent Matt Wandrie told MLive/The Flint Journal Thursday, Feb. 18. “This is a tough, tough time for our district.”
Jen Rondy, a teacher at Lapeer Community Schools and close friend, said Nichols “was there for everyone and anyone.”
“She was just so loving, so kind to anybody that she would ever meet,” Rondy said.
Nichols was born on July 3, 1974, in Lapeer to parents, Georgia Gibbons and Ed Gray, according to her obituary. She is survived by her husband of 25 years, Ray Nichols, and daughters, Alexis Hanton and Hannah Nichols. ....

For a second day in a row, schools are calling off class following the snowstorm that hit mid-Michigan.
A Facebook post Tuesday night by Lapeer Community Schools announced school will be closed Wednesday, Feb. 17. However, childcare will remain open through the district.
“Schools will be closed Wednesday, February 17, due to hazardous road conditions, mainly on our back roads. Kids & Company will be open for childcare only. Please SHARE,” the post reads.

Lapeer High School Returns to All Remote Learning After Outbreak
Students at Lapeer High School are now back to remote learning starting today.
As of today, all of the students at Lapeer High School will be learning from home for the next two weeks. In the last two weeks, the high school has reported 18 new cases of COVID-19. The new cases resulted in more than 200 students and staff having to quarantine. Because of this, the school is having difficulty keeping the building adequately staffed.
The District has made the decision to return to our remote learning plan for students in grades 10-12. This period of remote instruction will be for two weeks, from February 3 through February 16. Our plan is to return to face-to-face instruction on February 17. We will evaluate the status of our return consistently during this period.said Lapeer Community Schools Superintendent Matt Wandrie in a letter to the parents. ....

High School senior killed in early morning shooting

METAMORA TOWNSHIP, Michigan (WNEM) An 18-year-old is dead following a shooting in Metamora Township.
On Feb. 2 at 12:01 a.m., an officer from the Metamora Township Police Department was sent to 3660 S. Lapeer Rd. Lot 150 for reports of an accidental shooting.
When the officer arrived on the scene, they performed lifesaving measures on 18-year-old Kadan James Ryan from Lapeer.
Ryan sustained a gunshot wound to his torso, Metamora Township Police said.
He was taken to Lapeer McLaren where he was pronounced dead.
A 19-year-old man was taken into custody after the initial investigation.
Police said there are no other threats to the community. ....
