Leitrim County Council were recently involved in removing 38 lamb carcasses and 2 calf carcasses from a ravine in Derryhallow, Drumshanbo.
The lambs varied in age from 1 week to 3 months and had been dumped in a deep inaccessible ravine. The decomposing carcasses threatened water quality in the local river.
The Animal Warden also has concerns for animal welfare at the farm of origin of the animals.

Ireland s Leitrim County is not playing around when it comes to keeping owners on top of curbing their dogs. After deciding that mere signs weren t enough to keep their public spaces clean, the town s council has decided to go full CSI-style in their efforts.
The council announced a plan last week to enacted DNA testing on abandoned dog feces left in places like parks, streets, walking trails and housing estates.
The Leitrim Animal Warden will take samples of dog waste in areas with high levels of dog fouling and, using DNA, match the samples with saliva samples taken from dogs in the same area, reported the Leitrim County News. ....

To accomplish this, dog owners will be asked to co-operate with the warden in allowing a sample of saliva to be taken from their dog.
Dog owners who fail to comply will be issued with a statutory notice under the Animal Health & Welfare Act which compels them to allow a saliva sample to be taken. Failure to comply with this will lead to a fine or prosecution.
For dog owners who allow voluntary samples to be taken, in the case that a DNA match is confirmed, they will not be issued with a fine for a first-time offence. However, a fine may be issued if it happens again. ....
