DESOTO NATIONAL FOREST, Miss. (AP) When European settlers came to North America, fire-dependent savannas anchored by lofty pines with footlong needles covered much of what became the southern United States.
Yet by the 1990s, logging and clear-cutting for farms and development had all but eliminated longleaf pines and the grasslands beneath where hundreds of plant and animal species flourished.
Now, thanks to a pair of modern day Johnny Appleseeds, landowners, government agencies and nonprofits are working in nine coastal states from Virginia to Texas to bring back pines named for the long needles prized by Native Americans for weaving baskets. ....

Surge of vandalism has county officials frustrated

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - New Hanover County leaders are reporting a surge of vandalism in parks across the region.
Three different incidents have been reported at both Ogden Park and Long Leaf Park in the last month. Park leaders believe the three incidents could be connected.
Even on a chilly winter morning, the playground at Long Leaf Park is nonstop activity.
Nella Dement visits the park a lot with her 8-year-old son. Heading to the park quickly became an important part of their routine during the pandemic. ....

Goins awarded prestigious Order of the Long Leaf Pine

When attending the Lake Norman Shrine Clubâs Christmas event, Ben Goins thought it was going to be just like any other; however, this year he received a gift that was quite unexpected.
During the special occasion held Dec. 7 at the Heritage House, Goins noted that fellow Shriner Randy Marion got up and went to the podium and then proceeded to call Goins to come and join him. Wondering what was happening, Goins said he went up front and then Marion started reading about the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.
Marion said that this âis among the most prestigious awards presented by the governor of North Carolina. It is presented to individuals who have a proven record of extraordinary service and leadership to the state and communities, and proven in their career or business for over 30 years. ....
