Jamaica’s use of online schooling is to be explored in robust discussions by 18 students from six tertiary institutions in the third renewal of the Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College (SSTC) Western Tertiary Debates. The moot for the knockout competition, which was revealed at a virtual launch on Wednesday, February 24, is: ‘Online schooling has always been the gateway to an effective and productive education system, however, Jamaica continues to lag behind.’ The preliminary round is to get under way on Wednesday, March 3 with Montego Bay Community College proposing the moot, while the University of Technology (UTech) Jamaica Western Campus opposing. Also proposing are Bethlehem Moravian College and the University of the West Indies (UWI) Western Jamaica Campus, which will have Caribbean Maritime University (CMU) Western Campus and Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College, respectively, opposing. ....
Dr Alfred Dawes Fears that vaccines now being manufactured for the coronavirus (COVID-19) can’t be safe because they are being developed too quickly have been dispelled by prominent Caribbean surgeon, Dr Alfred Dawes. In stating that coronavirus is not new, Dawes said it is more deadly than other severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) diseases of recent years, while positing that vaccines should not be seen as a panacea to getting back to a state of normality. He has also debunked the many conspiracy theories making the rounds on social media, that the vaccine was being forced on the population because it was part of a ‘new world order’. ....
Western Bureau: Desiree Rankine, a year-two biology and mathematics student with a 4.12-grade point average (GPA), and Kardine Dunkley, a first-year student whose GPA of 3.904 was the highest among the Caribbean Maritime University (CMU) students, were the star performers among the more than 200 students recently awarded for excellence in higher education at the Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College (SSTC) in St James. Principal Dr Lorna Gow-Morrison said that the virtual ceremony was necessary to celebrate the students who have persevered despite the challenges, including uncertainties triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. “Commitment to growth through education has resulted in students exploring their educational journeys through remote learning and exploration of the virtual landscape,” said Gow-Morrison. “This commitment was also enabling all parties to learn together, learn from each other and empower each other to overcome challenges and grow.” ....
