Lansing Catholic employee fired for posting racist photo

LANSING A Lansing Catholic High School employee was fired after an investigation into a racist photo that was posted to the high school s social media pages.
Lansing Catholic High School President Dominic Iocco confirmed the employee, whom he declined to name, was solely responsible for the photo being posted.
While we believe this was not an intentional act, this was a serious lapse in judgment that precludes this person from continuing in a position that holds such responsibility, Iocco said in a statement issued Tuesday. Because of this, this person s employment with Lansing Catholic has been terminated effective today. ....

LANSING A furor broke out on social media Thursday morning after a Catholic high school posted a photo from the 1978-9 yearbook appearing to show students performing a Nazi salute, at least one of them in a KKK hood.
The photo was posted to Lansing Catholic High School s Instagram and Facebook pages around 9:45 a.m., accompanied by a #ThrowbackThursday hashtag, according to screenshots provided to the Lansing State Journal. ....

Michigan Community Service Commission supporting 56 MLK Day Projects
The Michigan Community Service Commission today announced it will help support 56 Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service volunteer projects engaging more than 5,000 volunteers who will serve more than 16,000 volunteer hours to benefit Michigan communities.
Projects include providing child-size masks to youth serving organizations and thanking healthcare workers for the care given to Michigan residents. Organizations have also planned projects to address community needs related to COVID-19 including food distribution events, providing support for the homeless, addressing mental health needs and providing education and tools to prevent the spread of infection. ....

DETROIT The U.S. Department of Justice has sided with religious and private schools in Michigan that brought a lawsuit challenging the state’s latest restrictions halting in-person high school instruction due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Justice Department last week filed a statement of interest in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan in support of the plaintiff schools’ motion to halt the shutdown of in-person instruction, arguing the move was unlawful and violated the students’ constitutional right to free exercise of religion. ....
