Karen Scott Sawyer


Karen Scott Sawyer, age 78, passed away on Thursday, June 24, 2021, after a 12-year battle with Alzheimer’s.
She was born in Paris, Texas, during the brief period her father was commissioned to build airstrips at Camp Maxie. Raised in Tyler, Karen attended Tyler Public Schools, graduated from Lee High School and enrolled in Tyler Junior College.
It was the summer of 1962 when she met William “Bill” Sawyer Jr. at a local park. They worked two different shifts for the summer parks program for special needs children. Bill began to bring her lunch each day and by the end of the summer he proposed. They married on Aug. 25, 1962, and together attended Stephen F. Austin University. Two years later, Karen gave birth to their only child, Susan “Stephanie.” ....

James Lewis Brantley


James Lewis Brantley was born on Aug. 20, 1940, in Honey Grove, Texas and was brought home weighing 3.5 pounds in his father’s size 12 shoe box.
James’ father was in the Army and his assignment took him to various places in Texas like Wink, Ozona and Fort Worth, and then to more distant places like North Carolina, California, Washington and even Japan.
James graduated from Belton High School in 1958. It was there that he became famous for scoring the two final free throws in the 1958 AA state basketball championship in which Belton beat New London 58-56 in sudden death double overtime.
James went on to attend Texas Christian University and serve his country in the United State Navy. Ultimately, James became a teacher, coach and principal, and retired from Clarksville ISD in 1994. ....
