EPA selects two Vermont entities to receive $1.1 million for brownfields cleanup

EPA Brownfields Funding Helps Local Communities Build Back Better and Address Environmental Justice Concerns
Vermont business Magazine Today, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that two grantees in the state of Vermont have been selected to receive $1.1 million to assess and clean up contaminated properties under the agency’s Brownfields Program. These funds will support under-served and economically disadvantaged communities in assessing and cleaning up abandoned industrial and commercial properties.
Northeastern Vermont Development Association (NVDA), in Lyndon, St Johnsbury, and Newport, will be awarded a $600,000 Assessment Coalition Grant. The town of St Johnsbury, will be awarded a $500,000 Cleanup Grant. ....

Public invited to discuss watershed action plan for the Upper Connecticut River

Vermont Business Magazine The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) invites Vermonters to attend an online presentation on February 11, 2021 to review a collaborative watershed action plan for the Upper Connecticut River Basin. The plan encompasses Upper Connecticut River and streams that flow to it from the Canadian border down to the Passumpsic River. It includes the Nulhegan River, Willard Stream, and Paul Stream along with several smaller streams that flow directly into the Connecticut River.

NVRH receives $450,000 grant to build prevention network

Vermont Business Magazine Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital (NVRH) has received the Vermont Prevention Center of Excellence’s Grant. This grant is a one-year grant opportunity with goals to reduce underage drinking, high-risk alcohol consumption, marijuana and tobacco misuse, prescription drug and stimulant misuse, and illicit stimulants and opioids. In order to build prevention capacity and infrastructure at the community, as well as regional levels, NVRH is partnering with Umbrella Inc.
The grant, which totals $450,000, tackles two components of prevention: the promotion of healthy lifestyles and norms that reduce the risks associated with the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and the reduction of the impact of those at higher-than-average risk for substance misuse. This includes individuals currently experiencing problems related to use. ....

NEK community bands together to boost Internet

So, in April residents decided to take matters into their collective hands and formed Northeast Kingdom Community Broadband – what is now a 32-town communications union district or CUD.
Evan Carlson, chairman of NEK Community Broadband, said 49 percent of the addresses in the three-county region have Internet access below 25 megabytes per second – a far cry from what’s considered high-speed Internet or broadband. ....
