Junkyard Fire In North Adams Determined To Be Accidental
After several days, it has been determined that the large fire that took place at George Apkin & Sons junkyard back on May 25 was accidental.
Mass.gov reports that according to North Adams Fire Chief Brent M. Lefebvre and State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey, the fire at the George Apkin & Sons junkyard in North Adams on Tuesday, May 25, was started as a result of heavy equipment being used on cars that still had gasoline inside their tanks.
Gasoline vapors were determined to be the cause of the fire. The operation was routine in terms of what the junkyard does daily. ....

The Commonwealth leads the nation in vaccinating residents, with 75% of adults receiving at least one dose. To date, over 4 million residents have received a first dose, with 3.2 million fully vaccinated. On Monday, May 17, Governor Baker, Lt. Governor Polito, Secretary Kennealy, and Secretary Sudders announced that all remaining COVID-19 restrictions will be lifted effective May 29.
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health will issue a public health advisory effective May 29 that advises all unvaccinated residents to continue to wear face-coverings in indoor settings and when they can’t socially distance. The advisory will also recommend that fully vaccinated individuals no longer need to wear a face-covering or social distance indoors or outdoors except for in certain situations. ....

A newly formed group calling itself Citizens Affirming All Lives Matter plans to gather Saturday to honor William “Billy” Evans, the former North Adams man who died on duty as a police officer at the U.S. Capitol last week.
