After hundreds of millimetres of rain, flash flooding in the first quarter of this year, and further wet rain on the horizon this week, Northern NSW households face two main dilemmas: when to wash clothes and how to keep mould at bay.
According to NSW Health, the key to preventing mould growth is reducing dampness at home.
“Repair all water leaks and plumbing problems e.g. burst water pipes, leaking roof or blocked rain gutters,” the government website suggested.
“If water enters your home, completely clean and dry water-damaged carpets and building materials. Discard material that cannot be cleaned and dried completely.” ....

Skin checks don t have to be awkward or scary, said a new GP offering the service in Ballina.
Love the skin you are in and get it checked, like you do with your eyes, teeth and hearing ‒ that s the recommendation from Dr Paddy McLisky.
I m offering skin cancer checks, I m doing biopsies, lesions and treating skin cancers, plus sometimes referring them on to plastic surgeons or dermatologists, he said.
The medico is originally from Eureka, and after learning new skills for a year in Tasmania, he has retuned to the Northern Rivers and joined the new Ballina clinic. ....

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has decided not to recognise psilocybin mushrooms (or magic mushroom) and MDMA (ecstasy) as medicines to treat a number of conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and other mental illnesses.
Although the TGA s decision is not final, it goes against what advocates want.
The request was raised by Mind Medicine Australia, a charity that advocates for psychedelics not to be restricted so mental health professionals can access such substances more easily.
In the case of medicinal psilocybin there were 575 responses of which 553 (96 per cent) were supportive, 11 partially supportive and 11 opposed. ....

Preventing mosquito-borne diseases one text at a time

The most common mosquito-borne diseases in the Northern Rivers are Ross River virus and Barmah Forrest Virus. They are not fatal, but they can cause serious illness and have long-term health impacts.
In 2020, the Northern NSW Local Health District reported 429 cases of Ross River virus. That is the second highest number of cases on record, up from an average of 135 cases a year over the last 30 years.

Ballina Shire Council s Environmental Health Officer, Kristy Bell, said the impacts of climate change and severe wet weather events are increasing the risks of mosquito-borne disease in our area.
Cases of Ross River virus disease are most commonly reported in late summer and early autumn, so it s important for the community to know what they can do to reduce risk, she said. ....

Tweed Shire Council has issued a red alert for blue-green algae at Clarrie Hall Dam following its latest water test results.
This red alert means that the water should be treated as toxic to both humans and animals, and should not be consumed without being treated.
Council s Manager Water and Wastewater Operations Brie Jowett said the water is also potentially unsafe to come into contact with the water.
The blue-green algal bloom at the dam is increasing rapidly, she said.
While there is no musty odour to the dam water or visible clumps of scum, our test results indicate blue-green algae levels are at the highest red alert level. ....
