Bailey blasts Coast MPs for derailing light rail plans

Residents have been told to ignore misleading political propaganda after Coast politicians pushed for heavy rail to be prioritised over light rail.
Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey blasted Sunshine Coast politicians for urging Sunshine Coast Council to prioritise heavy rail, before throwing support behind a local light rail network.
Kawana MP Jarrod Bleijie said the region could not have both a heavy rail connection to Brisbane and local light rail.
We re saying people should have their say but the priority of rail on the Sunshine Coast should be from Beerwah to Maroochydore, Mr Bleijie said.
The reality is if the council has its way (heavy rail) won t happen. ....

He pointed the finger at the state for not supporting the project despite placing ambitious population targets on the region.
The South East Queensland Regional Plan estimates the Sunshine Coast will be home to 500,000 by 2041, an increase of about 170,000.
“The State Government wants to jam 500,000 people on the Coast in 2041 so it’s time for them to start funding infrastructure,” Mr Wallace said.
“Show some ticker and interest and get on board with this project.
“Our roads are chockers now, see how bad that traffic gridlock is going to be then.”

The consortium was made up of Stockland, KPMG, Urbis and Smec.
The options both focus on fast rail links from Beerwah to Maroochydore along the CAMCOS corridor, with Nambour appearing to remain stuck with the existing track.
The two options were estimated to cost between $5.42 billion to $5.85 billion and $9.13 billion to $9.49 billion respectively.
The news of Nambour s apparent snub prompted outcry from the Nambour Chamber of Commerce and it was understood Fairfax MP Ted O Brien had sought a full briefing of the business case currently under evaluation by Infrastructure Australia.
