Professional tennis player Naomi Osaka invested in the North Carolina Courage, a women s professional soccer team, Thursday.Osaka was named the highest-paid female athlete of 2020 by Forbes, and is now giving back to other women in professional sports by becoming an owner. Raleigh, N.C. From the kitchen to athletics fields to larger corporations, North Carolina businesses faced pandemic-related shutdowns in March. But Congress provided businesses with a lifeline through the Paycheck Protection Program.
The PPP, which was part of the massive CARES Act relief package, offered small businesses the chance to get loans that wouldn’t have to be paid back if businesses met certain benchmarks, including keeping employees on the payroll.
More than 127,000 North Carolina businesses obtained more than $12 billion in PPP loans.
It paid our rent. It paid our power bills. It paid the staff we had until we could kind of get our feet back under us, said Robert Royster, owner of Ruckus Pizza in Raleigh, which got a PPP loan. ....

The proposed Downtown South sports and entertainment complex in Raleigh has sparked concerns of gentrification and environmental damage in mostly-Black neighborhoods in the urban core.
The Wake County Planning Commission last week unanimously rejected a request by developer John Kane to rezone 145 acres near South Saunders and Wilmington streets and Interstate 40 for a mixed-use sports-entertainment complex dubbed “Downtown South.”
For over a month – as commissioners repeated expressions of concern over being rushed for a decision – unanswered questions, and unsatisfied conditions were echoed by impacted residents and allies who voiced demands and opposition.
