Citizens sue to remove Iredell County Confederate Monument

The Iredell County Commissioners voted to remove the monument in March, but then reconsidered, prompting the lawsuit.
“A glorified symbol of White Supremacy stands guard over the Iredell County Government Center, a place where the government is supposed to serve all of Iredell County’s residents,” said Rev. Curtis Johnson, President of the South Iredell NAACP, in a statement on the suit Tuesday. “That is totally unacceptable, as the Commissioners recognized in their March Resolution. The Monument must go . . . peacefully, but it must go. The time is long overdue.”
Plaintiffs in the suit include the North Carolina State Conference of the NAACP, the NAACP’s Statesville and South Iredell Branches and the Iredell Clergy for Healing and Justice, an alliance of Iredell County religious leaders. Teachers Collaborating Across Borders (TCAB): Online Program for US and Middle East/North African Teachers.

Application Deadline:April 30th 2021
The TCAB program is a unique opportunity for 18 teachers from the United States and 18 teachers from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to engage in international dialogue and virtual exchange. In fall 2021, selected teachers will engage in synchronous and asynchronous sessions to discuss topics related to education and culture in their respective countries, as well as strategies to include this information in the classroom. In spring 2022, participating teachers will conduct a virtual exchange project in small groups between their students and report on their exchange experience at the end of the program.
