April 23 (UPI) South Korea issued a warning to North Korean defectors and activists after groups said they plan to launch thousands of leaflets and U.S. dollar bills at the border.
Seoul s unification ministry said Friday it plans to carry out the purpose of the amendment to the Development of Inter-Korean Relations Act in order to protect the lives and safety of South Korean citizens in the border region, local news service EDaily reported. ....

March 10 (UPI) The United Nations could be asking South Korea and other U.N. member states to do more to improve the human rights situation in North Korea a sensitive topic for Seoul as it seeks to bring Pyongyang back to talks.
U.N. Special Rapporteur for North Korean Human Rights Tomás Ojea Quintana noted in a new report to the U.N. Human Rights Council that the U.N. Security Council lacked action on North Korea rights abuses. ....

South Korea just passed a law on Monday banning the sending of leaflets, Bibles, other printed materials, flash drives, goods, and even money to North Korea.
Three months from now, Christian ministries, defectors, human rights activists, and other organizations who continue to send such items across the border can face up to three years in prison or be fined up to 30 million won, a report from Reuters said.
According to South Korea s Unification Ministry-the department that promotes the reunification of North and South Korea-the new law is a minimal effort to protect the lives and safety of residents in border regions. ....

Dec. 17 (UPI) South Korea expressed regret after a U.N. investigator raised concerns regarding the passage of a bill that could lead to a prison sentence of up to three years for anti-Pyongyang leafleting at the DMZ.
A South Korean unification ministry official issued an unprecedented statement on Thursday, directly addressing the comments from U.N. official Tomás Ojea Quintana, while defending the law that could also fine activists up to $27,000 for sending balloons containing pamphlets, Oh My News and Hankyoreh reported. ....
