Number of addicts soars in lockdown
The number of problem gamblers treated at specialist clinics has risen by almost a fifth during the pandemic.
Some 371 patients were referred to the National Problem Gambling Clinic between June 2020 and May 2021 – up from 316 the previous year. Five had amassed debts of at least £100,000 while 44 owed between £20,000 and £99,999.
Its founder Henrietta Bowden-Jones said people vulnerable to gambling have been impacted negatively by lockdown , blaming factors such as boredom and financial anxiety.
Matt Gaskell, who runs the NHS Northern Gambling Service, said they have also seen a spike in referrals, adding that coronavirus has created a perfect storm . ....

During the first lockdown, gambling firms agreed to stop advertising, in recognition of the potential dangers to vulnerable people cooped up at home. That pledge hasn’t been repeated in subsequent lockdowns.

Exclusive: National Lottery removed online £10 'Instant Win Games' because of addiction fears

Research by the Gambling Commission last year suggested a possible link between the higher priced games and problem gambling, after which they were removed from sale.
The National Lottery, run by Camelot, has doubled its income from such games in just two years, earning £750 million from punters playing games online.
Dermot O Leary, the TV presenter, fronted a video which suggested the public spend up to £50 a week on Instant Win Games that experts warn can be addictive.

The Telegraph show that the National Lottery saw its income from Instant Win Games increase fivefold in 10 years, now making up tenth of all its sales. ....
