BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) Gov. Doug Burgum on Wednesday signed a landmark $680 million infrastructure bonding bill that will use earnings from North Dakota’s multibillion-dollar oil piggybank to pay off the money over the next two decades.
The bipartisan bill has highlighted North Dakota’s legislative session and got wide support in both chambers, but only after months of negotiations. It represents the most amount of money borrowed in state history. It also has helped push the Legislature’s proposed two-year budget, including federal aid, to a record $15.8 billion, or about a billion dollars more than the current budget cycle that ends June 30. ....

FARGO The guilty verdicts for former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin on Tuesday, April 20, did not come as a surprise to Wess Philome, an organizer with the racial justice group OneFargo.
A Hennepin County jury took 10 hours of deliberation to find Chauvin guilty of second- and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the May 25 death of George Floyd. ....

“Finally. Finally, justice has been served today,” said Faith Shields-Dixon with Black Lives Matter Fargo-Moorhead.
Shields-Dixon says protests and calls for change over the past year have finally paid off, but the work doesn’t stop here.
“We still have to follow through with other young men that have been killed by the hands of police officers,” she went on to say. “So, no, we are not happy. We are not rejoicing. We are happy to see that justice is finally served, but we are still dying on the inside.”
Those with NDSU’s Black Lives Matter chapter say not enough is being done on campus. ....

Jamestown High School graduates return to compete in National LifeSmarts Championship and the team wins

This was the first time in JHS history that a team won the national championship.

The Jamestown High School 2020 LifeSmarts team won the national championship on Monday, April 19. The event was postponed to 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Jamestown team had won the North Dakota LifeSmarts to advance to the national event, which was held virtually. The Jamestown High School LifeSmarts team from 2020 won the National LifeSmarts Championship on Monday, the first time in JHS history that one of its teams won the event. ....
