Riverwalk Art Project kicking off with 'Inventions of Watertown' mural | Business

WATERTOWN â The portable steam engine, the paper bag, the safety pin and the Little Trees that dangle from rear-view mirrors â all Watertown inventions celebrated in a community mural taking shape this week.
Designed by Potsdam artist Liza L. Paige, âThe Inventions of Watertownâ is the first commission for the Riverwalk Art Project, a multi-year initiative headed by the Watertown Downtown Business Association. The goal: breathe colorful life into Veteransâ Memorial Riverwalk along the Black River, and propel the city to become a north country cultural center.
âThis is only the beginning,â DBA President Joseph A. Wessner said of âThe Inventions of Watertown.â ....

North Country Arts Council seeks art for July 'Pop-Up Market' | Arts and Entertainment

WATERTOWN â The North Country Arts Council invites artists to enter works for its Pop-Up Art Market to be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 24 at the park in Public Square.
This is a juried art and art-oriented show and all works sold must be created by the artist, rather than something purchased to sell.
Booth spaces are limited. Therefore, applications will be accepted and spaces assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
Artist spaces are 10-feet-by-10-feet with at least 6 feet between each. The fee is $30 per space. All participants will handle their own sales and must have a New York State sales tax certificate. Applications for the market can be found at www.nnyart.org. ....

Artistic entries sought for two upcoming exhibits

Two arts organizations have announced a call for entries for two upcoming exhibits.
The North Country Arts Council seeks entries for its âFlights of Fancyâ exhibit. It will involve a virtual opening at 6 p.m. May 14 with a virtual gallery available after the opening.
The exhibit, according to NCAC, will be a show of all things whimsical, mythical and make-believe, featuring work âthat presents ideas, subjects and themes that are fantastical, otherworldly and whimsical â but lift the spirits and delight your senses.â
Work in all media besides video, film and sound will be considered. The entry deadline is April 28.
The exhibit is also planned for physical display, with location to be determined. Itâs scheduled to run through June 18. ....

Watertown arts groups hoping to start riverwalk mural project this summer

WATERTOWN â Dan Robbins, the artist behind the paint-by-numbers sets from your childhood, might have been proud of efforts to take the graffiti-filled retaining wall in the cityâs Veteransâ Memorial Riverwalk and create pieces of art.
Thatâs because the public will be invited to participate in a paint-by-numbers mural this summer along a section of the 20-foot-tall wall in the city park along the Black River. The paint-by-number will be the first piece completed along that nearly 500-foot-long wall.
After that first paint-by-number piece is completed, organizers plan about 20 murals in all that will be finished over the next few years, said Joseph Wessner, president of the Watertown Downtown Business Association, which is spearheading the project. ....
