Six Washoe County School District (WCSD) students are being recognized for their achievements. Two are Olympic hopefuls, two National Merit Scholarship recipients, one who placed in a national art competition, and another who was one of only 100 students selected for a cyber tech scholarship.
Arika Kundu is a second grader at Roy Gomm Elementary School. She was named the state finalist in the Google Doodle competition, which had students create artwork surrounding this year’s theme: “I am strong because…” Arika’s artwork was placed in a competition with students from across the country. As a state winner, her work was featured on the Doodle for Google gallery, and she also received Google hardware and swag. ....

School board makes zoning changes during first in-person meeting in a month

After holding their last two meetings virtually, the Washoe County School District Board of Trustees met in person for their May 11 meeting, which was held in the conference room at the district’s administration building at 425 E. Ninth St.
People seeking to provide public comment began gathering outside of the administration building before the meeting began. The conference room is smaller than the school theaters and gyms the board has held its meetings in over the last year.
Board members heard several hours of vitriolic public comment in very much the same vein as has been expressed throughout the pandemic people railing on teaching equity and diversity, accusing the school district of “turning out social justice warriors” and complaining that mask mandates are tantamount to child abuse. One woman demanded the school board purposefully and publicly defy Gov. Steve Sisolak� ....

Parents of children with disabilities struggle with new challenges

So far, Taylor has kept her son safe from the novel coronavirus. But the pandemic has brought on new challenges for her and her family, and she s seen her son deteriorate in other ways. ....

Minorities in Washoe County are being vaccinated against COVID-19 at a lower rate than their share of the population, with Hispanics and Latinos experiencing an especially large disparity in the numbers.
Preliminary data received by the Reno Gazette Journal through a public records request with the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services and the Washoe County Health District show that vaccine equity is an issue in Reno-Sparks and surrounding areas. The data includes shots administered by the health district and partners such as Renown Health and Community Health Alliance. ....
