While Portland reached a record temperature of over 110 degrees Sunday afternoon, people gathered at Keller Fountain Park to take a dip and cool off.
“When will this be over?” was the question likely on every Portlander’s mind Monday as temperature records fell for a third-straight day.
The historic heat wave overwhelming the region led to all-time high temperatures records falling across the state over the weekend and on Monday.
Portland hit 115 degrees Monday afternoon, setting a new record high temperature for the third day in a row, according to the National Weather Service. Before the weekend, Portland’s record high temperature was 107, first set in 1965.

Under the wail of passing trains, Portland’s Old Town residents and business owners swap stories of the latest neighborhood goings on. Their conversations repeat themselves week after week. They fear crime is increasing. They’re bothered by tents lining sidewalks and trash piling up. They’re frustrated that first responders don’t arrive quickly when homeless neighbors experience a mental health crisis. And they worry about the immense task of reopening their businesses after a year of closures.

And they were all Portland officers and supervisors who chose to leave the state’s largest police force in the last year.
In 31 exit interview statements, the employees who turned in their badges or retired were brutally frank about their reasons for getting out.
“The community shows zero support. The city council are raging idiots, in addition to being stupid. Additionally, the mayor and council ignore actual facts on crime and policing in favor of radical leftist and anarchists fantasy. What’s worse is ppb command (lt. and above) is arrogantly incompetent and cowardly,” one retiring detective wrote.
