Graduate students reflect on changes from Deans Woodruff to Mayo

When Ph.D. student Sarah Peko-Spicer came to Northwestern in 2015, she worried about finding community as one of two Black graduate students in the statistics department. But the transition was not as difficult as she had anticipated, Peko-Spicer said.
“I remember finding this really thriving community of Black graduate students who were well supported by The Graduate School,” she said. “Many of us felt like TGS was a place that was really highlighting the successes of historically excluded students and constantly making space to celebrate them.”
Peko-Spicer attributed this environment, in part, to the work of former dean Dwight McBride, who left TGS in 2017 to become Emory University’s provost. Teresa Woodruff succeeded McBride, before leaving to become provost at Michigan State University. Dean Kelly Mayo, who has been at NU since 1985, then took over as interim dean and was appointed to the post permanently as of May 1. For some graduate student activists, hi ....

Some graduate students report impact of pauses to in-person research

For many humanities graduate students, the pandemic meant pauses to in-person research, delayed plans for graduation and disrupted career prospects.
On May 1, 2020, Northwestern University Graduate Workers hosted an International Workers’ Day sit-in to advocate for #universal1yr, an additional year of funding for all graduate workers at Northwestern.
Now, about a year after the NUGW action, graduate workers are experiencing varying degrees of delays to research, NUGW co-chair and Ph.D. candidate Charlotte Rosen said.
“Everyone’s experience is probably a little bit different, and some people have slowed down more than others,” Rosen said. “I think it’s pretty safe to say that the majority of graduate workers have experienced some kind of a slowdown.” ....

SOLR organizers emphasize the importance of continued support

Students Organizing for Labor Rights has raised over $90,000 for over 400 workers since March 2020, according to Weinberg junior and SOLR member Abbey Zhu.
SOLR, a community organization of Northwestern students building solidarity with campus workers, started their mutual aid fund last March to support Northwestern dining and hospitality workers during the pandemic.
On March 30, 2020, administrators announced plans to provide regular compensation and benefits to dining workers for Spring Quarter in partnership with Compass Group, the University’s food service provider. However, workers have repeatedly told The Daily and written to the community that they haven’t received compensation from the University. ....

CoalitionNU members emphasize collective action and existing demands

For the past year, graduate students have met with University administrators to demand Northwestern prioritize students with marginalized identities. The administration has largely responded with hesitancy, according to some students.
Sarah Peko-Spicer, an organizer of CoalitionNU and Ph.D. candidate, said the collective has demanded inclusive healthcare, increased funding for affinity spaces and other support systems after a year of pandemic mobilization and appeals to the University.
“I personally am rethinking if this is an effective pathway to be working down,” she said. “Are we just wasting everyone’s time sitting in these meetings?”
Still, Peko-Spicer said she hopes a projected return to campus may rejuvenate organizers after a difficult year where the graduate students’ academic and life responsibilities were exacerbated, particularly for caregiving students and those of marginalized identities.  ....
