Kourtney Kinchen talks her nonprofit passion project Encircled Jewelry

Kinchen gives all profits from Encircled Jewelry to groups that support and uplift current and formerly incarcerated people raising $2,700 so far. The Daily sat down with Kinchen to talk about her jewelry shop, creative process and inspiration. This interview has been lightly edited for clarity and brevity.
The Daily: How did you come up with the name “Encircled Jewelry” for your shop?
Kinchen: I graduated in September. I didn’t have a job yet, but I knew I wanted to do something. And so I started looking at Pinterest and different types of jewelry making. I watched a few videos on YouTube and just decided that I was going to make a business out of it within a week. So I was rapidly trying to come up with a name. Encircled is kind of communal, like a hug. But I was also thinking encircled, like people who are incarcerated are encircled by walls and just this horrible experience. ....

Tayari Jones talks race, marriage and incarceration in best-selling book

Best-selling author Tayari Jones said her book “An American Marriage” is about the intersectionality of marriage and race.
As part of the annual Leon Forrest Lecture Series hosted by the African American Studies department, Jones was a featured speaker in the Tuesday evening event.
“Sometimes people ask me whether or not this is a love story, or if it’s a story about injustice or a story about race,” Jones said. “A big part of what I try to do in this book is to say that these things are not separate.”
The book, “An American Marriage,” follows a young woman, Celestial, and her husband, Roy, who was arrested for a crime he did not commit. Celestial struggles with their love, and part of the novel is told through letters between the two. ....

'The Story of More' chosen as One Book One Northwestern

, the University announced Monday.
The book, published last year, examines the relationship between human existence, consumption and the impending climate crisis.
Jahren will give a virtual keynote address in October as part of a series of year-long events hosted by the One Book program.
One Book One Northwestern is hosted by the Office of the President, and has been an ongoing program at NU since 2005. It first began within Weinberg, but has since expanded to include the rest of the University.
Each year, One Book selects a piece of literature and hosts lectures, discussions and movie screenings centered around themes mentioned in the year’s selection, all to engage the NU community in campus-wide dialogue. ....

NU Prison Education Program event discusses death penalty abolition

Criminal justice experts discussed the inefficacy of the death penalty and the need for its abolition in a Tuesday roundtable.
In the event hosted by the Northwestern Prison Education Program, panelists broke down the history of the death penalty and the systemic harm it has caused, and offered other ways to facilitate accountability and rehabilitation within the prison system. Each panelist shared their encounters with the death penalty and discussed the ways it has impacted Americans’ lives particularly people of color, who are incarcerated at disproportionately high rates.
Pritzker Prof. and panelist Meredith Rountree said the death penalty has evolved in the United States to eliminate methods of execution determined unconstitutional. However, she said the U.S. policy still differs from other countries in its application. ....
