Kristy Dorsey: Airlines upbeat but skies are far from clear

The sense of relief across the airline and tourism sectors was positively palpable this past week following confirmation that from July 19, UK passengers who have been double-jabbed will not be required to quarantine when returning to England from amber list countries.
Flight and holiday operators reported an immediate surge in bookings following the announcement by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps. EasyJet said bookings to amber list destinations jumped by 400 per cent, with overall holiday bookings more than 440% up on the previous week. Similarly, British Airways and Tui experienced a swell in website activity.
The change does not affect passengers travelling in and out of Scotland, as was noted by Jet2 chief executive Steve Heapy. Having that morning published accounts showing that the budget travel operator fell nearly £374 million into the red last year, Mr Heapy was by the afternoon striking a considerably more upbeat note.  ....

Ferry fiasco: CalMac summer season delay until 2024

AS CalMac’s ferry plans took another body blow this week with talks over the provision of the catamaran Pentalina closing fruitless, the consequences for some island businesses look serious.
It means the prospect of no dedicated summer season vessel for three years across a number of communities that count tourism as one of their main industries.
A group of independent councillors on Uist and Bara said it was hoped the Pentalina move would plug the gap after the delay separately announced over the second of the two new CalMac ferries, Hull 802, which is due to serve the Uist/Harris to Skye route. ....

CalMac ferry crisis Ferguson Marine delay

A FOUR-MONTH delay in the delivery of the two vessels for the lifeline Scottish ferry service might as well be a year for businesses in the islands.
It could mean another full summer without the ferry capacity capable of serving tourism’s full potential and pressure on freight carrying manufactured goods, livestock and food products, in turn impacting the chain.
The nationalised Ferguson Marine shipyard has revealed both the Glen Sannox and the other ferry, titled hull 802, will be some time later than planned, because of coronavirus pressures and a labour shortage.
Ferguson Marine turnaround director Tim Hair said in his report to the Scottish Government: “Good progress has been made on the remedial work required at Ferguson, with extensive rework carried out on the vessels; remedial work on the design resulting in a ‘design freeze’; and the implementation of effective business processes.” ....

'Unprecedented anger' as CalMac ferry fiasco hits tourism

This week came further issues for the MV Lochnevis and MV Finlaggan, bringing more cancellations.
Rob McKinnon, chief executive of Outer Hebrides Tourism, said while the return of the MV Loch Seaforth was welcome, the islands have been hit hard by regular under-provision and he has written a letter to Transport Minister Graeme Dey calling for action.
He said: “With a month-long 20% reduction in capacity, the damage is not limited to the tourism sector, with empty supermarket shelves, chaos for hauliers and islanders being unable to travel.
“CalMac have had no option but to prioritise island traffic and freight, meaning tourism is particularly badly hit with space for visitors reduced by 30-40%.” ....
