May 13, 2021
ISLAMABAD: The Labor Welfare and Social Protection Expert Group (LWSPEG) has recommended to the PTI led government that Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety Division (PASS) should be mandated to devise a mechanism for registering more than 51 million informal workers in Pakistan.
It recommended to register them with NADRA with the provision to initiate contributory pension and provide them medical coverage with the help of insurance companies. In the aftermath of Covid-19 pandemic, the need arises to develop a database of informal workers, so that the government can take care of them in case of any emergency situation in the future. The LWSPEG recommendations to implement the Mazdoor Ka Ehsas (MKE) programme stated that all informal workers belonging to agriculture and non agriculture should be registered in Pakistan. ....

Towards a fairer platform economy | Political Economy

The government can make history by initiating reforms leading to a fairer platform economy in Pakistan
The last decade saw a massive growth in the platform economy. According to a 2021 ILO report, online web-based platforms have tripled and taxi and delivery platforms have grown almost ten-fold. Fair-work Foundation estimates the size of the world’s gig economy to be between 14 and 55 million workers, with the upper number increasing to 440 million workers, when country-specific estimates are considered.
The gig economy or platform economy is a combination of online/digital marketplaces engaging individuals for short-term tasks, and also referred to as digital labour platforms. The platform economy has two major forms of work: crowd work and work on demand via apps. Crowd work is performed online and is location-independent. It consists of software development, data entry and translation services among others. ....

Staff returning to the office risk 're-entry syndrome'

The easing of lockdown presents genuine management challenges to welcoming back employees, and experts warn that employers have a duty of care to avoid “re-entry syndrome” among their staff.
Some staff will be chomping at the bit for the chance for some face-to-face contact and others will be feeling apprehensive about a return to the office environment, but either way, the easing of lockdown presents very real management challenges to welcoming back employees after what has been a most extraordinary year.
Whether it’s staff coming back to the office full time or in a hybrid way after working from home or a period of furlough, this is not a return to business as usual. Experts warn that the combination of post-COVID stresses and fundamental changes to employee expectations require careful consideration and employers have a duty of care to avoid “re-entry syndrome”. ....

KARACHI: A labour court has asked the counsel for the management of the Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) to argue on Jan 6 on maintainability of its application seeking court’s permission to sack more than 50 per cent employees due to a financial crunch.
The PSM management had filed an application, through its acting deputy general manager Riaz Hussain Mangi, pleading to the court to grant permission to sack more than half of the mill’s workers.
