Elizabethton City Council selects Colorado firm to move forward on Surf Betsy project


ELIZABETHTON — The Elizabethton City Council took a step forward Thursday in plans to develop the city’s rivers for recreation.
By a unanimous vote, the council agreed to hire the Colorado firm of River Restorations to move forward with studies on the future recreational development of the city’s two rivers and whether the focus should be on the Watauga, the Doe, or a combination of the two rivers.
The council has designated $38,082.88 for the contract with River Restorations. The company is to investigate whether a white-water park could be constructed and successful in Elizabethton. The firm will also determine what engineering services are needed and whether the two rivers would be suitable for kayaking, rafting or tubing. ....

The new co-chair of the Appalachian Regional Commission may be familiar – as is one of her goals for the people of the mountains.  
Gayle Manchin and the ARC both have their roots in West Virginia.  “John F. Kennedy came to West Virginia, and there were no highways in 1960 when he was campaigning for president, Manchin said during a stop in Asheville Wednesday.  And he said a state can’t grow if it doesn’t have highways.”

Avery, Watauga among lowest May unemployment rates in state


RALEIGH — Unemployment rates (not seasonally adjusted) increased in 77 of North Carolina’s counties in May, decreased in eight, and remained unchanged in 15.
Scotland County had the highest unemployment rate at 8.6 percent while Orange County had the lowest at 3.3 percent. Thirteen of the state’s metro areas experienced rate increases, one decreased, and one remained unchanged. Among the metro areas, Rocky Mount had the highest rate at 6.5 percent while Durham-Chapel Hill had the lowest at 3.7 percent. The May not seasonally adjusted statewide rate was 4.5 percent.
Avery County’s unemployment rate in May was 3.6 percent, a .1 percent decrease from the previous month and tied for the third-lowest rate statewide, sharing honors with Watauga County, who also recorded a 3.6-percent unemployment rate in May. Mitchell had the highest unemployment of bordering counties at 4.9, with 4.6 percent in Caldwell County, 4.2 percent in Burke and 4.3 percent in McDowel ....

Jul. 6 Tarrant County reported three COVID-19 deaths and 67 new cases on Tuesday.
The latest pandemic-related deaths include a Bedford woman in her 60s, and a Fort Worth man and woman older than 90. All three had underlying health conditions, according to officials.
County officials did not report COVID data the previous three days because of the Fourth of July holiday.
The county has reported 263,757 COVID-19 cases, including 3,580 deaths and an estimated 258,119 recoveries.
COVID-19 hospitalizations
Hospitalized COVID patients increased by 24 to 174. It s the most reported since 179 on May 10. The pandemic high was 1,528 on Jan. 6. ....
