UDWR: Reusable GPS Collars | News for Page Lake Powell Arizona

Hiking to retrieve GPS collars used to track wildlife
It’s interesting to note that the Utah Department of Wildlife Resources uses GPS collars to track the migration and movement of thousands of animals here in Utah.

The collared animals include deer, elk, bison, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, black bears, cougars and many others. Data gathered from this project has been invaluable for Utah’s Wildlife Migration Initiative. When an animal dies, its collar emits a mortality signal that lets biologists know it is no longer alive.

The biologists then hike to the place where the animal died to try to determine a cause of death and retrieve the collar. (The biologists reuse collars whenever possible.) Some of the hikes are lengthy and some of the dead wildlife remains are grisly  but biologists come away from the retrieval trips with additional knowledge they can use in managing the state’s wildlife. ....

New Study Helps Pinpoint The Fences That Cause Problems For Wildlife

A new study from the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) shows that fencing has a bigger effect on migratory wildlife like deer and antelope than previously thought.
Fencing has been on the landscape for really a long time, but it s actually also missing from the discussion of a lot of ecologists and conservationists, even when we think about human impact on on the globe, people talk about roads, people talk about urban [areas], but fencing has been on the landscape for so long that people kind of take it as a part of the landscape and kind of become in that way invisible, take it for granted, said lead author Wenjing Xu. ....

Group In Park County Tackles Wildlife And Livestock Friendly Fencing

Park County landowners, residents, NGO organizations, and local government have united to tackle wildlife-friendly fencing in the area. This is the first of its kind in the state.
Fencing in the West has been an issue for ages. We need fences to keep livestock in but wildlife needs to be able to migrate, and fences can hinder that.
Tony Mong, Cody s Wyoming Game and Fish wildlife biologist, was trying to figure out a solution to this in Park County and realized most groups wanted to figure out a solution to this problem.
It kind of made sense to bring everybody together and see if we could be more efficient and get more done together, said Mong. ....
