With no context, the letter to the editor (Feb. 5, “Windmills Kill Birds”) citing the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Migratory Bird Program’s estimate of 140,000-500,000 bird deaths a year due to collisions with windmills sounds alarming.
It alarmed me, so I went to the fws.gov “Threats to Birds” web page for more information. I discovered that wind turbines (which kill up to 328,000 birds a year, not 500,000) are the lowest mortality-causing threat on their list. Collisions with communication towers cause an estimated average 6.6 million bird deaths; with electric utility lines, 25.5 million bird deaths; with vehicl ....

It stands to reason then that if thousands of windmills are spread across the United States, many birds will become extinct.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports that windmill turbines last about 20 to 25 years, while some last only 14 years before becoming defunct and produce energy only when the wind is active. What is left is an eyesore of a gigantic tombstone depicting a killing field where thousands of birds have died. ....
