Legislation on high-potency marijuana limits sees bipartisan support, opposition in second House committee hearing


For the second time this week, a bipartisan bill seeking to keep high-potency marijuana products out of the hands of teens advanced through a House panel with bipartisan support.
But unlike Tuesday s House Public & Behavioral Health & Human Services Committee hearing where House Bill 1317 was approved unanimously, House Finance Committee members from both sides of the aisle voted against the proposal.
Still, those opposed to the bill said they believed in bill sponsor and House Speaker Alec Garnett’s commitment to continue working on aspects of the bill and indicated a willingness to support an amended version of the legislation.
The Denver Democrat and Rep. Yadira Caraveo are the bill’s prime sponsors in the House while the legislation is being carried in the Senate by Sens. U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor (D-Tampa) about the American Rescue Plan, about two gun safety bills that just passed the House (H.R. 8 and H.R. 1446) and about Cuba policy.
“Thankfully, President Biden followed through with his promise to keep that $1,400 stimulus payment on track. The $600 at the end of the year, that was a down payment. Many of my GOP colleagues didn’t want to do any more than that.
“But we know that so many of our neighbors are still trying to stabilize their lives due to COVID-19 and that economic turmoil it brought. So yes, some of those payments are arriving in bank accounts already. It will be very important that folks file their tax returns. ....
