Moss ball take-back program garnered 87 returns

(Cheyenne, WY) – Aquarium owners stepped up this spring to help protect Wyoming’s waters from invasive zebra mussels. The hobbyists returned 87 moss balls during the month-long Wyoming Game and Fish Department moss ball take-back program, in addition to following directions to properly dispose of thousands of moss balls throughout the state.
“Many people made the extra effort to turn in their moss balls or dispose of them, and we’re appreciative. It’s clear how much each Wyomingite values our natural resources by heeding our warnings about the potential impacts to our waterways and infrastructure,” said Josh Leonard, Game and Fish aquatic invasive species coordinator. “You made a difference for our state. Thank you.” ....

Local governments watched the 2021 legislative session closely. Wyoming Public Radio s Catherine Wheeler spoke with Wyoming County Commissioners Association s Executive Director Jerimiah Rieman about how county governments fared in two issues the association was keeping an eye on throughout the session. Rieman began by discussing what changes lawmakers were considering on how local governments get revenue.
One of the top priorities of many legislators was to reduce spending for K-12 education. Governor Mark Gordon has mentioned it in his last couple of State of the State messages and the legislature was just a conference committee away from passing a bill to do that. But a major disagreement between the House and Senate over whether there should just be reductions or reductions that included some revenue led to the bill s demise. ....

Lawmakers returned to the Capitol in Cheyenne this week to resume in-person session work following a year of mostly virtual meetings held to limit the spread of COVID-19.
COVID-19 vaccinations ramped up across the state, meanwhile, as the state’s hospitalizations hovered in the 20s and active cases dropped below 600.

The virus hung heavy over the session. Its impact was evident in the new plexiglass shields and quieter hallways, and it threaded its way through the proceedings as a significant foe threatening most aspects of Wyoming’s current and future health. ....

CASPER, Wyo. The Wyoming Senate took up debate on Wednesday, March 3 to eliminate some requirements for government entities publishing information in local newspapers.
Senate File 17 would allow counties, towns and school districts to post minutes of meetings and salary information on their own websites rather than paying to have these published in a newspaper.
“As you can imagine, needing to pay for publishing of minutes of meetings when [those can be made] available on the public entity’s website or other locations can be quite costly,” Sen. Tara Nethercott (Laramie County) said. “We heard testimony from some of these entities that it comprises anywhere from 1% to 10% of their total budgets and can have a particular impact on the smaller communities where those margins are significantly smaller.” ....
