Reed died in 1986 from cancer. but continues to be remembered through the Donna Reed Foundation in her hometown.  Reed Foundation vice president, Pat Fleshner, says she was Donnabelle Mullenger when she graduated high school in 1938,and her parents couldn’t afford to pay for her college.
“She had an aunt who lived in Los Angeles and so she took the train to Los Angeles to go to college. She enrolled in L.A. City College,” according to Fleshner. “At that time in California if you were a resident it didn’t cost anything for tuition. It cost her as I understand $35  for books.” ....

Cloris Leachman, who has died at age 94, got her start in Des Moines

Des Moines Register
During a visit to her alma mater, Des Moines Roosevelt High School, in 2016, then 90-year-old Cloris Leachman delivered a TeddyTalk, where she was asked why she became an actress.
“It was just something to do for fun, she replied, according to an account on the Des Moines Public Schools website. It still is.”
The reality, however, is that the Academy Award-winning Leachman spent most of her life on a stage of one sort or another, working to develop the talents that would carry her to fame in movies ranging from the madcap Young Frankenstein to the bleakly tragic The Last Picture Show, for which she won her Oscar. ....

Iowa marks 175 years of statehood | PressReleasePoint

Before President James Polk went to bed on Dec. 28, 1846, he dipped his quill pen in ink and wrote in his diary: “Nothing much happened today.”
However, Iowans may disagree. That’s the day he signed a bill admitting Iowa as the 29th state in the Union and the reason the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, along with its divisions, the State Historical Society of Iowa, Iowa Arts Council and Produce Iowa, is unveiling a year of programs and activities to commemorate the 175th anniversary of Iowa’s statehood, culminating on Dec. 28, 2021.
“Iowa has a rich history filled with remarkable people and places that have defined who we are as a state now in the 21st century,” Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs Director Chris Kramer said. “We can’t wait to share the stories of Iowa  throughout the year ahead, and I encourage Iowans of all ages to learn more about our collective history through local museums, libraries and other organizations. ....
