Chatham's Coast Guard station downgrade concerns town officials

CHATHAM – The first of two 45-foot Coast Guard rescue vessels has been delivered, and the second vessel could be arriving this summer. But town officials are not giving up on their efforts to convince the agency to reverse course and keep a surf-ready vessel and trained crew in town to handle rescues on the notoriously shallow and dangerous sandbars that impede entry to the town’s Atlantic port.
On Tuesday, Chatham Select Board members agreed to go forward with a campaign seeking the support of other Cape towns in pushing the region’s congressional delegation to advocate for Coast Guard Station Chatham to retain its designation as a surf station, with a vessel and crew capable of operating in large breaking seas on both of the town’s Atlantic inlets. ....

Chatham officials worried about Coast Guard plan to replace rescue boats

CHATHAM Chatham has one of the most treacherous harbor entrances on the East Coast. The challenge is not just how to get over the shifting sandbars in breaking surf, but how to rescue those who get mauled in the attempt.
“For most of us, that’s the most dangerous part of the day that hundred yards getting yourself over the bar,” said Nick Muto, a commercial fisherman.
Town officials are concerned about U.S. Coast Guard plans to retire three 42-foot near shore rescue vessels that were built in 2010 specifically to handle the town’s shallow sandbars and breaking waves. ....

HARWICH The big green Exit 11 sign on U.S. Route 6 has always signaled home to Kathleen Giorgio.
Wen she was growing up, it was the exit she and her family took every summer when they came to Chatham on vacation. Year after year, they stayed in the same cottage. The charm of the old sign grew when her parents retired and bought a home in Chatham. When she and her husband, Mike, began a life together on the Cape, the sign took on the feeling of home.
It s also become the inspiration for a new business venture.
One September night in 2019, Giorgio pulled off to the side of the highway in the rain and snapped a shot of the sign. EXIT 11 was spelled out in big white letters, with a white arrow pointed right at the exit ramp. When she got home, she told her husband she wanted to put the sign on a baseball cap. ....

Select Board votes to bring back historic Coast Guard boathouse

CHATHAM – Select Board members voted unanimously Tuesday to return a historic Coast Guard boathouse to Chatham for use as a municipal shellfish grow-out facility.
The boathouse stood at Stage Harbor for over 70 years until it was placed on a barge and towed from Stage Harbor to storage in Hull nearly 12 years ago to avoid demolition.
A boathouse preservation committee sprang up to lead the effort to save the boathouse, which again faced demolition this past January in Hull before developer Jay Cashman offered to move it to his facilities in Quincy.
The group has offered to raise the money to pay for the storage, repairs to make the structure weathertight, and the move back to Chatham by barge. The committee is applying for Community Preservation Act money to help in that effort. ....
