North Carolina has about 1.5 million public school students, and according to a report from the Department of Public Instruction, 52.3 percent are minority students, while only 20.5 percent of teachers are minorities. 
It’s a disparity Gov. Roy Cooper hopes to improve with the creation of the DRIVE (Develop a Representative and Inclusive Vision for Education) Task Force, which he created in 2019 to work toward increasing diversity in education.
According to the task force’s report issued in January 2021, studies have shown that teachers of color improve the test scores of all students. There is also evidence to suggest that students of color are less likely to drop out if they have a teacher of color.  ....

A.L. Brown grad named Chancellor of Fayetteville State University

Darrell Allison, a 1990 graduate of A.L. Brown High School, has been named the 12th chancellor of Fayetteville State University, the school announced in a news release.
Allison has been serving the University of North Carolina Board of Governors since 2017 after being nominated by UNC System President Peter Hans. He is currently the vice president of governmental affairs and state teams at the American Federation for Children.
“Darrell Allison is a creative leader who understands the value of Fayetteville State University to the community, the region, and the state,” Hans said in a news release.
He continued: “Darrell’s expansive career in education and service to the UNC System has been important to this state, and especially our HBCUs. He brings with him a proven track record for student advocacy and a reputation for fostering partnerships that can further this university’s strategic goals. Through his leade ....

Fayetteville State names new chancellor


FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) Fayetteville State University has a new chancellor
Darrell Allison, a longtime advocate of North Carolina s historically minority-serving institutions, will take over the role March 15.
Darrell Allison is a creative leader who understands the value of Fayetteville State University to the community, the region, and the state, University of North Carolina System President Peter Hans said.
He ll be the university s 12th chancellor. Allison is currently vice president of governmental affairs and state teams at the American Federation for Children.
Allison succeeds Interim Chancellor Peggy Valentine,
who was appointed in July 2019 and previously served as dean of the School of Health Sciences at Winston-Salem State University. ....
