New Delhi: Tax Inspectors Without Borders (TIWB), a joint initiative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), launched its programme in Bhutan today. India was chosen as the Partner Jurisdiction and has provided the Tax Expert for this programme.
This programme is expected to be of about 24 months’ duration through which India in collaboration with the UNDP and the TIWB Secretariat aims to aid Bhutan in strengthening its tax administration by transferring technical know-how and skills to its tax auditors, and through sharing of best audit practices. The focus of the programme will be in the area of International Taxation and Transfer Pricing. ....

Experts speaking at the UN s Economic and Social Council s annual Special Meeting on International Cooperation in Tax Matters concluded that the international community must do more to tackle tax base erosion and profit shifting and offshore tax evasion.
Among other pressing topics, tax policy specialists and senior Government officials throughout the day-long meeting – which featured three panel discussions on the role of tax revenue in fighting inequality, combating climate change, and funding health systems, respectively – also discussed new proposals to enact a global corporate minimum tax; considered ways developing countries can escape the tax exemption race to the bottom as they seek to attract big businesses; and weighed the benefits and drawbacks of taxes on the world ....

Tax Inspectors Without Borders and partners pass USD 1 billion milestone in additional tax revenues for developing countries

TIWB is a joint OECD-UNDP initiative that deploys qualified experts in developing countries across Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean to help build tax capacity in the areas of audit, criminal tax investigations and the effective use of automatically exchanged information. TIWB assistance has led to increased domestic resource mobilisation in some of the least developed countries in the world.
During the fifth virtual TIWB Governing Board meeting on 27 April 2021, co-chaired by the OECD Secretary-General, Mr. Angel Gurría, and UNDP’s Administrator, Mr. Achim Steiner, participants celebrated the mobilisation of more than USD 1 billion in additional tax revenues for developing countries, with nearly three times that amount in total tax assessments. The meeting highlighted TIWB’s success and commended the ability of the joint OECD and UNDP teams to maintain operations despite COVID-19 pandemic travel restrictions in 2020 and 2021. ....
