Like last year, non-availability of drugs used in the treatment of COVID-19, hoarding and illegal sale of drugs have surfaced in many parts of Tamil Nadu. Relatives of patients are travelling far and wide to Chennai to get Remdesivir, while a number of them are paying exorbitant rates to get the drugs. ....

There has been a rise in demand for oxygen support for COVID-19 positive patients during the second wave as compared to last year. Data obtained from the health department shows that nearly 40% beds in government hospitals and 28% beds in private hospitals with oxygen support have been occupied as at 8 p.m. on April 26.
Doctors say that they could see more positive patients with lung involvement due to the coronavirus infections. This increases the requirement for oxygen support, they say.
Government Rajaji Hospital Dean J. Sangumani said that there was sufficient quantum of oxygen available at the hospital. Last year, initially the hospital had an oxygen capacity of 6,000 litres. It was increased to 20,000 litres last year. Currently, the hospital has the capacity to store up to 26,000 litres of oxygen, he said. ....

Shortage of COVID-19 vaccines causes concern

A shortage of COVID-19 vaccine has been reported in a number of hospitals and health facilities across Madurai district.
The data obtained from the Health department shows that till date 2,22,300 doses of vaccine has been received by Madurai district 1,98,400 doses of Covishield and 23,900 doses of Covaxin.
A total of 1,84,898 persons have been administered COVID-19 vaccination in the district until April 19.
The data shows that the first batch of Covishield vaccines were received by Madurai district on January 15. Since then, the district has been receiving varying quantities of Covishield vaccines at different intervals and the last batch was received on April 15. ....

Hospitals gearing up to treat rising COVID-19 cases

With the rising new COVID-19 positive cases, the government and private hospitals in the district are gearing up to handle the additional number of cases.
Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) Dean J. Sangumani said that health infrastructure in the hospital has been geared up to handle the rising number of cases.
Medical Superintendent M. Balasubramaniam said that there are a total of 1,561 beds to treat COVID-19 patients in the COVID-19 speciality wing of the GRH, Government Hospital for Thoracic Medicine at Thoppur, and old OG block of GRH. Currently, non-COVID-19 cases are routinely treated at the hospital. ‘We will postpone the elective surgeries only if there is a sudden spike in cases,’ he said. ....
