There has been a rise in demand for oxygen support for COVID-19 positive patients during the second wave as compared to last year. Data obtained from the health department shows that nearly 40% beds in government hospitals and 28% beds in private hospitals with oxygen support have been occupied as at 8 p.m. on April 26.
Doctors say that they could see more positive patients with lung involvement due to the coronavirus infections. This increases the requirement for oxygen support, they say.
Government Rajaji Hospital Dean J. Sangumani said that there was sufficient quantum of oxygen available at the hospital. Last year, initially the hospital had an oxygen capacity of 6,000 litres. It was increased to 20,000 litres last year. Currently, the hospital has the capacity to store up to 26,000 litres of oxygen, he said. ....

The day-to-day rise in fresh coronavirus infection in the district has resulted in beds filling up fast in major private hospitals, and a significant number of patients required oxygen support.
Data obtained from the Public Health department shows that at Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) – the hospital with the highest number of beds for COVID-19 patients in the district – nearly 56% of the 1,561 beds are filled.
In the six COVID-19 Health Centres in the district, nearly 36.20% of the beds are filled. These centres include Tirumangalam, Melur, Vadipatti, Peraiyur and Tirupparankundram Government Hospitals and the Railway Hospital. ....

COVID-19 patients occupy 832 GH beds

760 beds occupied in GRH alone
Of the 1,887 beds in all government hospitals of Madurai district, COVID-19 positive patients have occupied 832 beds, according to a report from the public health department.
Government Rajaji Hospital is treating 760 patients. Government hospitals at Tirumangalam, Melur, Vadipatti, Peraiyur and Tirupparankundram; and the Railway Hospital in Madurai are the government hospitals treating COVID-19 positive patients.
As many as 182 patients have been admitted to the two COVID-19 care centres - Madurai Kamaraj University hostel and MKU Constituent College in Kappalur. A total of 518 beds are lying vacant at the two centres.
As many as 1,064 patients are under home isolation. Of the 41 private hospitals in Madurai district that give COVID-19 treatment, Madurai Meenakshi Mission Hospital has the highest number of 84 patients. Velammal Medical College Hospital has 71 positive cases and Apollo Hospital has 62 cases, according to the report. ....
