FRANKFORT, Ky. (KFVS) - Governor Andy Beshear ordered flags at half-staff in honor of a Kentucky sailor killed at Pearl Harbor.
Flags at all state buildings will be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Saturday, May 15.
Navy Fireman 2nd Class Martin D. Young, of Hawesville, Kentucky, died in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. His remains weren’t identified until fall 2020. ....

Remains of Kentucky sailor killed at Pearl Harbor return home

HAWESVILLE, Ky. (Tribune News Service) Navy Fireman 2nd Class Martin D. Young was 21 years old when he was killed during the Dec. 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Now, nearly 80 years later, his remains will be brought home to his native Kentucky and he ll be laid to rest on Saturday.
Young, a native of Hawesville, was assigned to the battleship USS Oklahoma, moored at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor. The ship was attacked by Japanese aircraft and sustained multiple torpedo hits before capsizing. Young was one of the 429 crewmen to die on board the ship.
His nephew, Layman L. Hawkins Jr., said Tuesday that he was contacted by the U.S. Navy about seven years ago, requesting DNA samples from the children of Martin s siblings. ....
