LEXINGTON, VA The Virginia Military Institute s Board of Visitors voted to remove the name of Confederate General Thomas Stonewall Jackson from Memorial Hall on the grounds of the Lexington school.
The board of visitors also voted to remove Jackson s name from a quote inscribed on the Old Barracks at VMI. Because research has shown that Jackson did not originate the phrase, his name is being moved from underneath the quote, VMI said. ....

Lynchburg Parks and Recreation celebrates Arbor Day. There’s a commemorative tree planting today at Riverside Park. The Arbor Day Celebration commemorates the life of the U. S. Constitution Tree that was planted in 1937 and removed in March of this year. Community organizations will also be there, with crafts and activities.
Amtrak will celebrates its 50th anniversary today with a virtual celebration. President Biden will make remarks today about the rail service. The Virginia Military Institute Board of Visitors voted unanimously Thursday to appoint retired Army Maj. Gen. Cedric T. Wins as the school’s superintendent.
Mr. Wins is the first Black person to hold the position in 182 years. He graduated from VMI in 1985, and has been serving as the interim superintendent since November.
“If someone had told me a year ago that today I’d be the superintendent of my alma mater, I would have told them they were crazy,” Mr. Wins said in a press release. “However, the interactions that I’ve had over the past six mont ....

VMI announces Maj. Gen. Cedric T. Wins to serve as superintendent
LEXINGTON, Va. (WDBJ) - The Virginia Military Institute Board of Visitors has voted to make its temporary superintendent permanent.
The board voted Thursday to permanently install Maj. Gen. Cedric Wins as superintendent. He had been serving on an interim basis since being named to succeed General J.H Binford Peay III, who resigned from the superintendent position in October 2020 after 17 years.
Major General Wins is the first Black man to lead VMI in its 181-year history.
