Virginia Tech Board of Visitors members reappointed

Gov. Ralph Northam recently announced the reappointment of two members to the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
Anna Healy James, of Virginia Beach, senior vice president of government and community relations for Sentara Healthcare, and Letitia A. Long, of Alexandria, chairman of the board of the Intelligence and National Security Alliance, will each serve a second four-year term which began July 1.
At its June 8 meeting, the Board of Visitors announced that Long would serve as rector for the 2021-22 academic year, contingent upon her reappointment by Gov. Northam. With her reappointment to the board, her term as rector began July 1. Ed Baine, president of Dominion Energy Virginia, in now vice rector. ....

Human-AI teaming for DC-based emergency response -- GCN

Members of Montgomery County, Md.’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) are using an artificial intelligence-based system to find COVID-related items in Twitter posts that may call for action.
As part of research by a team from Brigham Young University (BYU), George Mason University (GMU), the University of Texas (UT) at Austin and Virginia Tech University, CERT volunteers dubbed the Virtual Emergency Response Team (VERT) are tagging tweets based on relevance to help train the AI to recognize data that indicates a situation that emergency response may want to know about.
Under a grant from the National Science Foundation to study human-AI teaming in emergency response, the researchers had been studying how the AI platform, called CitizenHelper, would work during natural disasters. Many industries such as retail, hospitality, and travel were hit especially hard with slower recovery rates than other sectors.
