Farmer injuries reach five-year high, hitting $84 million in ACC claims

A quad bike death in 2015 highlighted the dangers of New Zealand s second most dangerous industry.
ACC’s head of workplace safety Virginia Burton-Konia said while farmers spent their lives growing the country’s food, they were not great at looking after themselves.
“Farmers need to get better at putting in systems to look after the most important asset on the farm, themselves and those who work in the business.”
In 2016 ACC became a strategic partner of rural wellbeing programme Farmstrong, and recently increased its investment to $3.5 million over the next five years.
Burton-Konia said the programme helped farmers focus on simple tools like getting enough sleep, eating right and exercising. ....

Few takers for safety subsidy

ACC injury prevention manager Virginia Burton-Konia says agriculture is a high risk area and quad bikes create significant costs to the scheme and therefore significant injuries for farm workers.
She says it s not just farmers, but sometimes farm workers, whānau or manuhiri who are on farms.
Last year ended up with $80 million worth of cost to the scheme focusing on injuries in quad bikes, you know we ended up with 566 I think injuries in 2020.
There were also seven fatalities as a result of quad bike accidents in 2020.
Burton-Konia says ACC is of the view that a lot of quad bike fatalities could be prevented if they had crush prevention devices or roll-over bars fitted. ....
